What is Scatter Diagram?

Tags: QUALITY EXECUTING

Scatter Diagram:  The Statistical relationship of two variables. This tool deifnes the effect of one variable on the other. If one variable is changed, does it have a positive/negative or no effect on the other variable. It is further classified into 3 types:

  • Positive Linear Correlation: On X axis, you have independent variable (Number of hours studied for the PMP exam). On Y axis, you have dependent variable (PMP exam score). Any change on the X axis is closely correlated to your exam score.
  • Negative Linear Correlation:  On X axis, you have independent variable (Number of late night hours studied for the PMP exam). On Y axis, you have dependent variable (PMP exam score). Any change on the X axis is negatively correlated to your exam score.
  • No Correlation:  On X axis, you have independent variable (Number of people taking the exam). On Y axis, you have dependent variable (PMP exam score). Any change on the X axis is not related at all to the Y axis.

Nominal Group Technique

Tags: SCOPE PLANNING

Let’s understand this technique with an example. You want to develop a  training company website. While collecting the requirements from the stakeholders, you will do the following steps:

  1. You will first setup a brainstorming session with stakeholders.
  2. You will document the ideas on a white board let’s say once everyone has given their inputs.
  3. The team starts doing  detailed discussion on the ideas generated in this session.
  4. Everyone gives their individual votes on the ideas. The usually develop a matrix and ranks them from 1-5 where 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest.
  5. The team continues on the discussion for several rounds until the team is convinced with the final set of requirements.

Should I give the PMP exam in PMBOK 5th Version or 6th Version?

Tags: INTRODUCTION INITIATION

Lot of students are reaching out to me on this question: Should I give with 5th or 6th version of PMBOK? My response to them is PMBOK 5th version and I have my own reasoning behind this but ultimately it’s your own decision, whether you give in 5th or 6th version, what matters in the end is this 3 letter word “PMP” after your name.

Why I think 5th version is better?

A.      Good number of changes have been done in 6th version and popular reference books/training companies will take time to adapt to the new version which will not be immediate. However, if you give the exam in 5th version, students already have all the necessary reference books, lessons learned from so many of their colleagues/friends etc which will ultimately help them to succeed.

B.      Assuming you are doing PMP in order to grow in your career, in order to find a new job which will improve, help you grow your skill set. Do you think the interviewer will ask you this question: “ Did you give the exam through PMBOK 4th, 5th or 6th version?” However, they may ask you whether you are a PMP or not?

C.       I will talk about our training simulator, as I can’t speak about other popular PMP practice simulators. The last exam change was in 2013 and it took us 4 years to reach where we are. In order to thrive in this market and compete with the so called “Best PMP Simulators”, we constantly updated our question bank. We wanted to make sure that we give our students the “BEST” and the “NEAREST” real time experience. Did we succeed in this? I would say: Yes, we did but definitely we can improve. But was it an overnight thing? No, it required constant hard work and real time feedback from students to help us grow and improve. So ask this question to yourself; Who has more probability to succeed? Somebody who is giving the exam in Dec 2017 or somebody who is giving the exam in Q2, 2018? The answer may vary as it depends upon individual to individual, there are many other factors as well and it will not be right on my part to generalize this statement but if I tweak this question and ask: “Who will have more/better resources for PMP? You know your answer and make a decision accordingly.

Difference between Change Management Plan Vs Configuration Management Plan..?

Tags: INTEGRATION MONITORING AND CONTROLLING

Change Management Plan Vs Configuration Management Plan.. Lets understand this by using an example I am a project manager and you are my team mates working on building an Iphone. We developed the phone and were sharing the specifications with the customer. The customer did not like the camera specifications and requested us to change the camera specification from 5 mp to 12 mp. When we do this, this means we are involving configuration management plan. So changes which determines how to deal with product specifications we use configuration management plan… Now, same example, this product change will result into 2 months delay of project timeline and $10,000 extra budget is required… So any change where baselines/other factors are affected, we use: change management plan. Simple and easy
